Designer Profile - Haberdash House
Name: Marie Liddell
Age: 28 years old
Location: Edinburgh
Design background: I graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2006 with a Honours Degree in Textile Design, before that I did an HND in Stitched Textiles and Fashion Design at Telford College. However, ever since i was little, I have always enjoyed being creative and making things. My favourite subject at primary school was the sewing class when we got to make fabric hamburgers from felt and glue!
Where do you get your inspiration from? I get inspiration from a wide variety of sources, such as places I have visited, people I have met and childhood memories. The inspiration for my current collection came from a college trip to New York in 2005. I also have a very vivid imagination which helps!
Is this your full time job? This keeps me pretty busy but I also have a part-time job in a clothes shop.
Where can I find you in real life? I take part in Miso Funky markets which are held in Glasgow and Edinburgh about every 6 weeks. You can also see my work in Godiva Boutique in Edinburgh.
Any tips for someone who wants to start making their own stuff? Sometimes it can be hard to motivate yourself, especially if it is sunny outside, so it must be something that you are really passionate about. Don't undervalue your work, think about the time it takes you to make it and work out if you will make a profit.
What music do you listen to whilst you work? I have quite an ecclectic taste in music. Just now I'm listening to some old favourites like Dolly Parton and Johnny Cash as well as newer stuff like The Fratellis and The Killers. If I have a tight deadline to meet, I find that some old skool dance music makes me work faster!
What is your favourite item that you have made? My favourite item is Gilbert the Goat, especially the wooden version with his smart gold bell.
Can you recommend another designer? I admire Ryan McGinness, an artist from New York. I saw some of his work in the Museum of Modern Art when I was in New York and found it really inspirational. His paintings feature lots of random objects, put together in a really clever way.
